DNN Update is a DotNetNuke module and service that helps you to easily keep your DotNetNuke components up to date. DNN Update provides updates to DotNetNuke modules and other components.

When you use DNN Update, you don't have to go hunting for for upgrades to modules - the service does all the work for you.  Using DNN Update, installing many new modules at once is a single-step, fast and easy process.

DNN Update consists of two seperate components:

1. The DNN Update web server and web services, which supply information to the DNN Update module. The DNN Update web services are operated by Inventua and reside on our servers.
2. The DNN Update Service module, which you install into your DNN portal.  There are two different editions of the DNN Update Service module, one for DNN 2.1.2, and one for DNN 3 & 4 (DNN 3 modules are generally compatible with DNN 4).

When you install the DNN Update Service module into your DotNetNuke portal, the installation process automatically creates a "DNN Update" tab (page) in your host menu.  To use DNN Update, just click "DNN Update" in your host menu, configure the module with your DNN Update username and password and click "Check for Updates."

When you browse to the DNN Update page in your site and click Check for Updates, the module contacts the DNN Update server and receives a list of all available modules and their latest versions.  The module running inside your DNN portal compares the list of available modules with the modules you have installed, and then compares the versions you have installed with the versions that are available from DNN Update.  The DNN Update module then presents a list of available updates for you to choose from.

You choose the components that you want to automatically update using the DNN update service and click Update Now.  The DNN Update service automatically downloads and installs the components you selected and displays a detailed report showing the success or failure of the installation process.

DNN Update uses the same components of DNN that the module, skin and container upload pages use, so any install done via DNN Update will have the same results as locating, downloading and installing the component yourself.
